Two Tickets to the Gun Show

So like most gals my age (which for those of you that don't know me is of course, 25), I had a rather unnerving revelation the other day.  Remember the scene in The Sweetest Thing where Cameron Diaz is in the dressing room at that dress shop with Christina Applegate and she starts waving her arm and wondering aloud at the extra skin that now seems to dangle from her arm?  Yeeeeeaaaah. Thankgoodness I'm not quite at that point yet, but I'm well on my way.  Everything is a lot "jigglier" than it used to be and well let's be serious, when I "flex" my arm, it practically humps downward instead of upward.

So, in an effort to stave off the jiggles and increase my upper body strength, I am going to be trying a 30-day arm challenge.  Back in the day when I did my personal fitness appointment at the YMCA (ya know, the one that you go to where they show you all the equipment, tell you how many of each machine to do and you get all pumped up, never to go back again), I remember on the leg machines I could start at what I thought was a pretty decent weight, at least 50 lbs or so.  They'd set the arm machines to like 10 lbs and I couldn't even move them.  Again, yeeeeeaaaaah.  God forbid I ever fell in a hole and needed to pull myself out to survive.

So thank you to Pinterest and a post I found from The Sisterhood of the Shrinking Jeans, I will be trying their 30-Day Arm Challenge.

It's exactly what it sounds like... 30 days of arm exercises to supposedly transform your arms from jiggly, little noodles to buff, beautiful guns.  Or at least that's what I'm telling myself.  So in the spirit of fun and to give myself some sort of comparison, here is a before pic of my jiggly, little noodle:

(I also especially love how my arm almost blends in with the white door behind me)

The challenge is made up of a combination of push-ups, planks and chair dips, which increase a little over the course of 30 days.  There are rest days built in and the website explains how to do "modified" versions of each one if you need to build up your strength first.  This is what the schedule looks like:

I should've probably started yesterday since it was the first of the month and it'd be easier to track but oh well, too late now.  So I decided to start this morning and did my first round before sitting down to write this blog.

HOLY NOODLE.  Not only was that way harder than I expected it to be but my arms feel all tight and a little shaky even now as I type.  FROM THE LOWEST SETS ON THE CHART.  This should be interesting.  Now, I knew I wasn't the strongest of gals but I (mistakenly) thought I could at least do 5 push-ups (and when I say push-ups, I mean the modified type when you're on your knees).  I could barely do five and I wasn't even going all the way down.  Bright side:  I can only go up from here!

The "plank" was pretty challenging too... I was shaking like a leaf before the 15 seconds were up but I think I might try it the other way tomorrow, where you rest of your elbows.  I know they said that was more advanced but it somehow seems easier in my head.  The chair-dips were the only thing that I think I did halfway well.  Success!

So I'll keep you posted and of course, post another pic at the end of my 30 days, showing off my bronzed (guess I better buy some self tanner) muscular arms!  And if you decide to take the challenge too... leave me a comment and let me know it's going.

Until then, take care and I'll see you at the GUN SHOW.
