Furniture, Fabric and Finishes

It's finally time for the fun stuff!  Well almost, anyway. Now that all the framing and wiring is done on the house, Graham (my builder) is finishing up the exterior.  About a month back, he informed me that my original choice for siding - ship lap - was going to be way more expensive than we thought and there wasn't room for it in the budget.  He suggested we go with cedar plank siding since it would give me a similar look to what I wanted and it was much more affordable.  So I made the executive decision and told him to go for it.  I got some new pics of it today and I think it looks great!  But it will look even better with my purple shutters!  ;)

So with the everything moving along so quickly, I get to start making some fun decorating decisions!  First I get to pick paint colors - the purple for the exterior trim & front door, the purple for the accent wall in my loft and the white for the interior.  Since there's not a whole lot of interior space in a tiny house, you don't want to overload it with color.  But with that being said, I don't want a boring black and white house either!  The white walls and the brown floors make the perfect neutral backdrop for lots of pops of color and I think an accent wall in the loft will be a great way to soften the sleeping area.  I'm thinking something along these lines...

Any of them would make a peaceful bedroom retreat but I gotta say, "Free Spirit" seems like a pretty appropriate name!

For the outside, I've decided to add small shutters around the windows to give it even more of a "homey" look.  So the shutters and the front door will be purple.  Since it's on the outside and against the cedar plank, I obviously want it to "pop" so it will be a bolder shade than on the inside.

But the choices just keep coming!  Since my sofa is going to be a built-in unit with storage underneath like this...

I also get to choose the fabric for the sofa cushion.  May seem like a small detail but it's all fun to me!  So now the question is to go neutral or not to go neutral.  I like the dark gray in this photo and I could always add color with throw pillows.  Or perhaps a teal cushion...

And then there's IKEA.

If ever there was a tiny home dweller's paradise, that store is it.  It's full of double-duty furniture and creative space solutions.  My friend Amber and I went on a "research" trip a couple weeks ago and made some awesome finds!  Like this little shelf with a wire to hold my laptop off to the side when I'm not working at the breakfast bar...

Or this little cart that I can use double-duty as a nightstand and a tiny dresser in my loft...

Or my favorite find... a LOW-PROFILE BED!!  I didn't even think there'd be a possibility of having a bed in my loft but this might just make it a reality.  I would have to give up a little of my headroom, but it would also give me a teeny bit of under-the-bed storage and give the loft more of a "bedroom-y" feel.

I'll have to wait until the interior is done or at least almost done to decide on most of the furniture and storage solutions since I won't know for sure how much space I will have.  But I'm sure having fun getting ideas in the meantime!  :)

Until next time...
