Downsizing & Tiny Living

How My Life Changed After I Started Practicing Minimalism

How My Life Changed After I Started Practicing Minimalism

Whenever I give a presentation on downsizing and de-cluttering or teach a course on it, I always tell people that it will give them a new life perspective.

It may seem like a pretty lofty statement - how could donating a few bags of clothes and a few boxes of kitchenware change your life?

Because, if you've come to the point where you are ready to start practicing minimalism, your life will never be the same.

Why I'm Glad My Tiny House Fell Apart

Why I'm Glad My Tiny House Fell Apart

If you know me from my episode of HGTV's "Tiny House Big Living," you know that in 2015, I moved into a 160 square foot tiny house on wheels named "Sweet Caroline."  You may remember it as the one with the rooftop deck, the one with the purple front door or most infamously, the one with the collection of 150 shotglasses that had to be worked into the design plan.

The 168 Items I've Traveled (and Lived) With For the Last Year

For the last year, I have lived with 168 items.

At first glance, that may seem like a large number.  But, I challenge you to count the number of things around you in your house (heck... just the room you're in right now) or the clothes in your closet and you will see how quickly your possessions add up.

Why Swedish Death Cleaning Isn't As Morbid As It Sounds

Why Swedish Death Cleaning Isn't As Morbid As It Sounds

Lately, there seems to be a consistent flow of new "methods" to approach simplifying and minimizing your life.  Which I am all for, since I am all about some minimalism.  But, I'll have to admit, even I paused for a moment when I heard the term, "Swedish death cleaning."

So, what exactly is Swedish death cleaning?

One Question You Don't Want to Ask When De-Cluttering Your Home

One Question You Don't Want to Ask When De-Cluttering Your Home

When you decide to downsize or de-clutter your home, you are going to ask yourself a few questions.  That's just part of the process.

Do these pants still fit me?

Am I ever going to start crocheting?

Was there a time when a cotton candy machine seemed like a good idea?

7 Things You Need to Know About Downsizing and De-Cluttering

7 Things You Need to Know About Downsizing and De-Cluttering

If you're the least bit interested in downsizing, minimalism and de-cluttering, you might want to listen up.

As someone who has not only gone through a major downsizing process myself (a.k.a. getting rid of 80% of my belongings and moving into a 160 sf tiny house on wheels), but also writes about it, speaks about it, teaches courses about it and helps others to physically do it... I know a thing or two about downsizing.

5 Easy Ways to Simplify Your Life This Year

Well, here we are halfway through February.

How are your New Year's resolutions going?

Don't worry.  Much like Planet Fitness, this is a no-judgement zone.  If you've already fallen off the wagon with your promise to exercise every day or your resolution to quit sugar cold turkey, it's okay.  In fact, I'm not really a big fan of New Year's resolutions anyway.

What I am a fan of, however, is life change.

10 Sources of Clutter You Can Clear Out Today

Stop me if you've heard this before.

My closet is a mess.  There are so many clothes in there that I can barely push the hangers apart, even though I feel like I wear the same things all the time.  The shelves are overflowing with stuff and the floor... well, don't even get me started on the floor.

I need a bigger kitchen.  Every cabinet and drawer is packed full and half the time, I can't even find what I need.  Even the pantry seems to have turned into a black hole where random food goes to die.  I don't remember buying half of this stuff, so how did it get there?  And why does my whole family still look in there and say we have nothing to eat?
